HBA Advocacy Update

NAHB Area 10 Caucus Report

On June 18, Area 10 members (ND, SD, MN, IA and WI) met to discuss national and state updates at the 2022 National Association of Home Builders' Spring Leadership Meetings in Washington D.C. Talking points included:

 Registration for the International Builders’ Show 2023 in Las Vegas opens Sept. 1.

  • The upcoming IBS will combine the kitchen and bath with the hardware show at the convention center. They are planning to have shuttles to the surfaces show which includes carpet, counters, etc. at the Mandalay Bay Hotel.
  • Sales are up 11% for the show!

The Associates Committee is now going to have their own shop talks. This is similar to NAHB’s IDEAS app which provides news, trends, and techniques for the industry.

Regarding construction codes and standards, there are four people with seats on the code's council. There is a 79% success rate.

  • Something to keep an eye on and an ear out for are accessory units. While they aren't very common here, they are popping up in other states in Area 10. These are structures in a backyard that are then being used for rental properties.

Aug. 15 is the voting deadline to get building officials registered for cdpACCESS. This is where they can be registered to vote remotely on building codes.

There was discussion around having an Area 10 summit on career academies to discuss what is working and what isn’t. Minneapolis would likely be the location because of its centrality and there’s a chance the HBA of F-M is going to be asked to be a part of advisory committees.

HBA of F-M members who participated in the caucus meeting include:

  • NAHB Senior Life Director John Gunkelman, Dakota Construction of Fargo, Inc.;
  • HBA Immediate Past President and NAHB Delegate, Kim Hochhalter, Building Concepts, Inc.,
  • NAHB Alternate National Director and HBA Board member, Mike Lemke, Lemke Home Improvements, Inc. and
  • HBA President and NAHB Delegate David Reid , Radiant Homes.

Present on the pannel was NAHB Senior Life Director Don Dabbert, Jr., Dabbert Custom Homes.
