Sheriff Jahner has been with the Cass County Sheriff's Office since 1998, when he joined as a correctional officer. Over the years, he has held multiple positions, taking on various roles as patrol deputy, detective with the Drug Task Force, and eventually reaching the positions of sergeant, training sergeant and captain. In these roles, he supervised various divisions, special operations and led critical emergency response efforts during events like the 2011 floods.
He was elected as sheriff in 2019. Jahner is a Certified Police Instructor, proficient in a range of disciplines, and has dedicated considerable time to both his own training and providing certified training hours to officers in multiple states. His dedication and service have been recognized with awards, including three Distinguished Service Medals, the Meritorious Unit Citation, The Sheriff's Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Combat Action Cross, Deputy of the Year and Supervisor of the Year.
Sheriff Jahner holds a bachelor's degree in humanities and social sciences with a focus on criminal justice from North Dakota State University. He has also completed various leadership courses, including those offered by the Department of Homeland Security's National Academy, National Command & Staff College, FBI Trilogy Leadership Courses, and the Dale Carnegie Leadership Course, among others. He serves on various boards, including the Red River Regional Dispatch Board, Crime Victim Services Board, North Dakota POST Board and serves as Vice-Chair of the Dakota Territories Sheriff's Association.
